Traveling this summer? Reinforce your door security before going on vacation.

Summer is the perfect time to unwind and enjoy a well-deserved break. However, it is also one of the favorite times for burglars to break into empty homes. Therefore, before packing your bags, make sure your doors are properly secured.

At Pro Key Solutions, we want your vacation to be all about rest and fun. Follow these tips and travel with complete peace of mind.

1. Check your lock’s condition

Before leaving, check that your lock is working properly and shows no signs of wear. If it is loose or rusty, or if the key turns with difficulty, replace it with a more secure lock. If you’re unsure, consult a professional locksmith.

2. Replace your traditional lock with a high-security one

Many burglaries occur because of vulnerable locks. Traditional locks offer little resistance to techniques such as bumping or lock picking. Consider installing a high-security lock or a smart lock with remote control from your mobile phone. These locks are nearly impossible to break using traditional methods.

3. Install a metal shield for the lock

Attacks with drills or crowbars are common. That’s why you should replace the lock trim on your exterior doors with a steel shield. This accessory, also called armor, protects the cylinder from:

  • Forcible removal
  • Forced rotation
  • Hammer blows

This reinforcement will cost you less than the cost of repairing a damaged door.

4. Reinforce the frame and door

The lock is not the only important factor; the frame and door must also be solid and resistant. Many doors can be easily dismantled because they were installed with short screws, and the hinges are visible from the outside.

Installing a metal reinforcement on the frame, replacing small screws with long ones that anchor to the wall, and installing a reinforced or solid door will greatly hinder access by intruders.

5. Add additional locks

Security experts recommend adding “layers of protection”. Additional locks and security bar provide greater resistance to burglary attempts and add an extra layer of defense. They are inexpensive and highly effective at deterring burglars.

6. Install digital peepholes or cameras

A digital peephole or small camera at the entrance allows you to see who is approaching your door, even remotely. Some models send real-time alerts to your cell phone.

7. Don’t forget about windows and secondary entrances!

Make sure all windows and back doors are properly closed. If possible, reinforce them with additional locks or security bars.

The difference between a standard door and a reinforced door can be enormous. A standard door may offer just a few seconds of resistance, while a reinforced door can withstand 20 to 30 minutes against a burglary attempt. If a burglar has to use power tools, make noise, or risk being seen or triggering an alarm, they will most likely give up and look for an easier target.
